Caregiving Skills - Newborn and Childcare
Provide compassionate, attentive care to newborns and young children, ensuring comfort, safety, and healthy development at all times.
Assist with feeding: support breastfeeding, prepare and feed formula safely, and ensure infants are fed regularly and adequately.
Monitor and manage hygiene needs: change diapers, clean the diaper area gently, and provide regular baths and grooming as appropriate.
Ensure safe sleep environments for infants, following guidelines like placing babies on their backs and avoiding loose bedding.
Handle newborns properly, always supporting the head and neck; use soothing techniques like swaddling, rocking, or gentle holding.
Recognize and respond to cues such as hunger, discomfort, or fatigue to meet the child’s needs quickly and calmly.
Perform health monitoring: observe for signs of illness (fever, poor feeding, jaundice) and report concerns to healthcare providers.
Practice infection control by washing hands, using clean supplies, and keeping the baby’s surroundings clean and germ-free.
Support dressing and thermal protection by choosing appropriate clothing for warmth without overheating the infant.
Care for the umbilical cord: keep it clean, dry, and exposed to air; avoid applying any substances and watch for signs of infection.
Offer emotional comfort by providing a calm, nurturing environment, responding to cries, and encouraging bonding through eye contact.
Maintain a safe, sanitary environment, following newborn care protocols to promote health, hygiene, and early development.
