Work Experiences:
November 2021 to present: Private Latin, Greek, Classical Civilization, English, History, and Oxbridge Preparation Tutor

Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilization:
James tutored sixteen students in Latin from beginner to A level. Twelve of the Latin students live in Australia, eleven of whom reached me through a private tutoring school called First Class College. He teaches them all online at levels ranging from beginner to GCSE. The other four Latin students are at the beginner, 13+, GCSE level, and A-Level. He also has one Classical Greek student, who is a beginner.

History:
James had one student who was preparing for the GCSE History papers ‘Conflict and tension: The inter-war years, 1918–1939’ and ‘ Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship’. The student requested a focus on the content of the papers, rather than the exam technique. He starts with basic chronology and dates before working up to more complex questions of causation, consequences, differing interpretations, and so on. He reinforces the material covered with short quizzes at the start of each lesson.

English:
He had one student who was preparing for the 11+ examination and another one preparing for the 13+ common academic scholarship examination. Through a combination of vocabulary tests, practice papers, and additional reading, He has helped the former improve his test scores from below 50% on average to 70-80% on average on CGP practice papers and other 11+ past papers. He also helped him better structure his written work and advised him on how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions through occasional past papers. He intends to apply to Tiffin School. The latter is going to the Royal Grammar School in Guildford. He was helping him to prepare through a variety of passages and past paper questions.

Oxbridge Preparation:
James has guided four Sixth Form students through their Oxbridge personal statements and interviews. Their subjects were Philosophy, Politics, Economics, Geography, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and Chemistry.

Summer 2018: Group Mentor at National Citizenship ServiceJames led a group of about fifteen 16-17 year olds through a four week programme as part of the National Citizen Service. The first week was a residential activity week at an outward-bound centre, the second a skills acquisition week, and the third and fourth weeks involved planning and implementing a social action project. He also attended compulsory training days prior to the start of the programme and a graduation event after the end of the programme.

Cancellation Policy
Our standard cancellation policy is that cancellations within 24 hrs may still be charged at the full rate. It is at the discretion of the tutor, and the circumstances are taken into consideration. We tend to advise tutors to give the benefit of the doubt to the client in the first instance, and politely remind them, then they are fully in their right to charge for repeat offenses, but they must notify the client they will do so so it isn't a surprise bill.
